Numbers that start with a "9" are an ITIN. I don't think that you can use one for EIC.

My client, a US Citizen, married a man from So America. He just received a tax number that starts with 942-XX-XXXX.  When I went back to amend the 07 return to add him on, and when I changed from Single to MFJ, the EIC was eliminated. 

 

 The EIC worksheet message said the Social Security number was invalid for EIC purposes. What is the next step the spouse must take to be eligible for EIC?
