Re: [taxchat] Hasn't filed a tax return since 1999

Filing a 4506-T is free, and you just get a transcript of the return. It's a computer printout of all the entries on the return.

Filing a 4506 costs $39, and for that you get an actual copy of the return.

I would file the free 4506-T first, especially since they don't know if they still have it.  If you get the transcript and it doesn't show what you need, you can still file the 4506 and pay the $39.

Re: [taxchat] Hasn't filed a tax return since 1999

Now that I see the 4506, it says that returns are only kept for 7 years.  So, I can't get a copy, anyway.  The State of Minnesota said they want returns from 1999 on.  They don't stop at 2002 like the IRS does. Wow.  I hope the client has a copy.  He is trying to find it.
