Re: [taxchat] Acronis

There is a wesite at radified.com which has forums where you can get reviews and feedback on most of the backup software in the market. It is free and very useful and informative.

By the way, from Ghost images, one can retrieve individual files, which is very handy when accidentally a file is deleted.

Mel or Chuck, or JoJo, I think you might be familiar with this one – or any others who might know, I'd appreciate suggestions.

I'm looking into Acronis imaging software, or other possibilities in the event of a server meltdown, so that I would be able to be up and running ASAP.  I have a backup system but would like the extra security of an image of my server so that I wouldn't have to reinstall the OS or applications.  The server has 3 physical hard drives, a C drive and a mirrored D drive.  I'm running XP Pro.

  1. Will the Acronis software be capable of imaging the entire computer, including all 3 hard drives?  Which version would be the correct one?  I read of one called True Image 2009.
  2. What would be the medium required – would and external hard drive hooked up to a USB port work?
  3. In your opinion is Acronis the best way to go about this, or is there a better imaging solution?

Thanks for suggestions.

RE: [taxchat] Roll over question

Converting to a Roth in 2008 makes sense in that rates are lower now than they are likely to be in the future. Also, if the market recovers, the recouped loss will be never be taxed. In order to recognize the conversion for 2008, you would have to do it before the end of the year. It is only recharacterizations and new contributions that can be made before the due date of the return.

Quick question for you regarding Traditional vs. Roth IRA's....  My wife is 52 and I am 53.  We had before the stock market crash approximately $125,000 of mutual funds in traditional IRA's which obviously are worth significantly less now.  We expect future income tax rates to increase dramatically between now and the time we retire.  Our business income is way down this year due to the rotten economy.  Does it make any sense for us to convert our traditional IRA's to Roth IRA's given this scenario?  Is it advantageous to pay income tax now for the benefit of not paying income taxes following our retirement?  If this makes any kind of sense, does the roll over have to be done by 12/31/08 for the 2008 income tax return?

Can they wait and do it before they file? I believe they have to roll over before 12/31/08 but can change their mind and revert back before filing.

You may want to look at Ghost Systems Solution 11.5 version which is based on original Ghost. It is bullet proof and works well from w98 thru Vista. This is not the same as the over the counter Ghost.

Do they want to convert to a Roth and are considering the option to recharacterize at some point down the road if the market falls futher? If so, wouldn't they be better off waiting until 1/2/09? Then they have until the filing deadline in 2010 to recharacterize. If they decide to do so, they could still recharacterize at any time in 2009. The rules as I read them are pretty liberal (no political comment intended.)

If their thinking is that they may convert to a Roth, recharacterize back to an IRA and then reconvert to a Roth, TheTaxBook provides the following rules:

Reconversion Rules

When a traditional IRA is converted into a Roth IRA, then recharacterized as a traditional IRA,

then converted back into a Roth IRA, it is called a reconversion. A taxpayer cannot reconvert before:

·      The beginning of the year following the year in which the amount was originally converted into a Roth IRA or, if later,

·      The end of the 30-day period beginning on the day on which the amount was transferred  from the Roth IRA back to a traditional IRA in a recharacterization.

This scenario might be the one that you were referring to. Again, doing the initial conversion in 2008 or 2009 doesn't seem to make much difference. If they recharacterize in 2009, they would still have to wait until 2010 to reconvert.

Arnie may be the most familiar with this topic. I'd be interested in hearing from him on this.

RE: [taxchat] Acronis

I'll serve as an "any other".  We use Acronis True Image Server Edition and love it.  Our server has 4 physical drives with a Raid 5 system.  We image to 2 SATA drives, one a MWF the other a TuThSa.  We use SATA for the increased speed but USB would work also.  If the server can see it, Acronis can too.

Fortunately, we have not had to test a full reimage but have restored files from the backup on occasion.  Our IT guy had a server drive meltdown a couple of days ago so he was able to test a full restore (not sure of the server specifics).  He slapped in new drive, restored and up and running with no issues.

We keep a couple of spare drive and image all our workstations prior to tax season for the same reason.  They always seem to die at the worst possible time.  With an image, we can drop in a new drive and be running in minutes.

There are other image programs out there (Norton has one) but out IT guy recommended Acronis so that's what we use.  Interface is very user friendly.  I set up automatic jobs for all our backup (including a monthly run) with no difficulty at all.

[forum-pajak] Help : Pengusaha Non PKP Terhadap PPN Masukan
