Re: [taxchat] printer recommendation

The rebate form states that the printer must be purchased from an HP Authorized Reseller.  Per HP's website, Electronica Direct is not on their list of HP Authorized Resellers.

I hope you get it anyway.  Keep us posted.

Did you check to see if the place were you purchase the printer is an HP Authorized Reseller, if not the Rebate is no good.

I had that problem with HP before.

My HP printer arrived yesterday.  less than 48 hours after ordering it.

It is perfect, sealed OEM, UPC bar codes are still there on the box.  The HP box was not double boxed, rather they slapped a shipping label directly onto the HP box.

I have received this printer for a delivered cost (after mail-in rebate) for about $25 more than the retail cost of just the toner cartridge alone (one comes in the HP box).  Or another way of looking at it, some offices might buy several, and for $25 you can have a whole spare printer.

The printer is new, network plug-in to share among computers in the office, and has the duplexer option with the added memory (make sure you order the higher priced "dn" model)

The rebate continues through 9/27/08 (today)  or possibly 9/30/08

buy the printer here:

I will check the box before signing for it.  I will specifically look for the UPC Bar Code before signing.   People are cutting the bar codes off and claiming the $450 rebate for themselves, and then selling the unopened box for as much as they can get for it.

If I accept the box, and then after opening it I am not happy, I can use the features of my credit card:    "low cost guarantee"    and  "90 day satisfaction/theft guarantee"   and/or I can dispute the charge for fraud/misrepresentation, if it ever came to that.

A search of pcRUSH found chat boards where some customers said they received refurbished merchandise.  The cost from pcRUSH is $598.86 + $58.10 shipping

So I found a better deal here:

the cost is $549.95 + $51.43 shipping, which is $55.58 less than pcRUSH, and this is for new sealed box from a HP authorized reseller.

$601.38 less $450 rebate = $151.38  + your voluntarily remitted use tax to the State.

Just the new toner cartridge alone retails for about $125.

RE: e-filing, was Re: [taxchat] Mailing tax returns

That’s all good.  There’s a chance that I’m wrong, I admit that.  When my IRS friend has to efile, I’m sure he will.  And when I have to, so will I.  As I noted earlier, I’m already efiling simple returns, the ones that I don’t care whether they data mine.  I’m not against efiling in principle, the advantages are obvious.  But at present, I don’t feel that it’s in most of my clients’ best interests to efile them.  And that’s an overarching concern.  YMMV.

Whether your friend is spot on or is telling you something to justify his own paper mailing the IRS is going to be mandating over 80% E-file in the foreseeable future. And as an IRS employee your friend will be frawned upon heavily for not doing so unless he has one of the exception forms that needs to be mailed in. And many of those are now expected to be mailed in attached to the 8879 after the return has been E-filed. I'm a few years ahead of you in that I wouldn't E-file originally. Now I'm glad I made the switch. I now offer to increase the cost of the return if I have to print a paper return. The amount of paper I don't buy per year is amazing. As this is the first year I will surpass 400 returns for the year the amount of savings has added up. I give the clients a disk with a pdf file of all their back up and another pdf file of the client copy of the return. I also ask them to return the disk next year.

The IRS’s goal is to turn preparers into their collection arm  That’s the whole purpose of the new “more likely than not” standards and Sec 6694 preparer penalties. Given this new adversarial environment, I am not going to make it easier for the IRS to come after me or my clients.  Paper-filed returns make it harder; it’s just that simple. I will continue to represent my clients, not the IRS.

I think it's going to take an act of Congress for the IRS to mandate e-filing. My personal opinion is that it will be part legistlation dealing with unlicensed preparers.

The flip side of this is that within a couple of years, clients due a refund will have it deposited within 2-3 days of e-filing.

Re: e-filing, was Re: [taxchat] Mailing tax returns

when is the last time you went to a seminar with IRS there?  they tell you differently.  talk to one of them & they will tell you the real purpose of 6694.

The IRS’s goal is to turn preparers into their collection arm  That’s the whole purpose of the new “more likely than not” standards and Sec 6694 preparer penalties. The standards for tax preparers are higher than for the taxpayers themselves.  I never file a return with anything in it that I know is wrong or false.  But I do take some aggressive positions which possibly wouldn’t meet MLTN.  I’m not anxious to find out, because if I lose, I get a minimum $1000 preparer penalty.

Given this new adversarial environment, I am not going to make it easier for the IRS to come after me or my clients.  Paper-filed returns make it harder; it’s just that simple. I will continue to represent my clients, not the IRS.

Re: e-filing, was Re: [taxchat] Mailing tax returns

I've argued this one until I'm exhausted, not gonna do it anymore.

I have a college classmate who has stayed in touch over the years. When our
kids were young, we used to vacation together. He is a high-ranking career
IRS man. He has confirmed to me any number of times that whenever the IRS
launches a new fishing expedition, which happens frequently, they use only
efiled returns. The details are so much more accessible and sortable, you
see. I'm taking his word for it; he paper files his own return.
