Re: e-filing, was Re: [taxchat] Mailing tax returns

Whether your friend is spot on or is telling you something to justify his own paper mailing the IRS is going to be mandating over 80% E-file in the foreseeable future. And as an IRS employee your friend will be frawned upon heavily for not doing so unless he has one of the exception forms that needs to be mailed in. And many of those are now expected to be mailed in attached to the 8879 after the return has been E-filed. I'm a few years ahead of you in that I wouldn't E-file originally. Now I'm glad I made the switch. I now offer to increase the cost of the return if I have to print a paper return. The amount of paper I don't buy per year is amazing. As this is the first year I will surpass 400 returns for the year the amount of savings has added up. I give the clients a disk with a pdf file of all their back up and another pdf file of the client copy of the return. I also ask them to return the disk next year.

DIF score doesn't require 100% input.  And anyway, it's not DIF score that concerns me, it's data mining.  Two entirely different procedures.

Please don't patronize me.  I've been a CPA for 37 years, I've been preparing 1040s for 40 years, and I have learned a few things along the way.

sorry chuck, im thinking here he hasnt kept up with the times, even if he does work for IRS.  they will pull a return if the DIF score isnt right ... doesnt matter if paper filed, or efiled.

I've argued this one until I'm exhausted, not gonna do it anymore.

I have a college classmate who has stayed in touch over the years. When our
kids were young, we used to vacation together. He is a high-ranking career
IRS man. He has confirmed to me any number of times that whenever the IRS
launches a new fishing expedition, which happens frequently, they use only
efiled returns. The details are so much more accessible and sortable, you
see. I'm taking his word for it; he paper files his own return.
