RE: [taxchat] hourly rates

I think it's still worth doing.

I charge $ 175 / hour for tax prep, and $ 60 / hour for bookkeeping (older clients are still at $ 50 / hour).  I'm in the Los Angeles area.  I'm a registered tax preparer (State of California) -- did the H&R Block tax prep course about 14 years ago and then worked for an E.A. who had previously worked for the IRS, for 5 years, then on my own.  Did the 5-unit Accounting 101 class in college (got an A, whoopdie-doo).  QuickBooks Certified Pro Advisor.  And every year, since I'm in California, I do 20 hours required continuing education with a 160-question exam that I have to pass each year.  And, of course, constant self-study and looking things up and figuring things out.  I took an Estate Tax online class from NATP once (it didn't help, ha !).  That is probably the extent of my "tax credentials".  I work in my home office.

I believe that many CPAs and EAs around here are charging up to $ 300 and even $ 400 an hour.

Cheers,
JoJo

My part of the country and my credentials may warrant a different value they others. This is a no can do project until everyone has the same education at a minimum.

I know that this topic has been discussed before but if everyone wants to participate this time I will put together an excel SS & forward to anyone that is interested.

I would like to know what everyone else is charging for bookkeeping / tax returns per hour.  I know that most people charge by the form but I have always charged by the hour.  So if you charge by the form, either give an estimate or just your hourly bookkeeping rate.

If you would include your rates and state, that would be great.

I'll start:

For Bookkeeping work we charge              $65 if they are a one time client that just needs their books reviewed or P&Ls prepared

$60 if they are a monthly client or a client that already using us for payroll and/or taxes

For Tax Work                                                   $95 for individuals

                                                                                          $105 partnerships

                                                                                          $115 Corps – C or S

We are in CA

Thanks for the input and let me know if you want a copy of the spreadsheet.

Thanks,

Cris
