RE: RE: [taxchat] online backup services

I still use an older version of Ghost for this purpose. However, Acronis is supposed to be the better program at this time. Acronis has a page where you can "download" an older version of the program for free and "upgrade" to the current version for $29.99.  I put both terms in quotation because you needn't install the old version if all you want to do is get the new program at the discounted price.

“I also create an image periodically of my primary Windows disk. I had a hard disk go on me once and being able to restore a backup image once the disk was replaced,  saved me untold hours of grief.”

I couldn’t agree more strongly with Mel on this.  One of my backups is always a mirror image, and I’ve had the same restore experience as Mel.  Every program on the mirrored copy ran perfectly. Acronis True Image is all I need, and they practically give it away.

Again, sorry for the delayed response. My feeling is that the more ways you can protect yourself, the better off you'll be in the long run. I use both internet and a local backup routines. I do a full backup to the internet once a week and incremental backups nightly. The product I use does all its work on a scheduled basis and the data is encrypted as part of the backup process. Some people discussed cost here. I wouldn't focus on that as much as getting the type of backup service that works best for you. My full backup is close to 1 gigabyte compressed so having fast servers at the other end is important. I also am very happy with the support I've gotten. Whether the products discussed are as good as what I use (or better) is an open question since I've never tried them.

I also use a program called Second Copy to run automated backups of data to an external drive. You can set up backup profiles to run as frequently as you want and include an option to do a backup at shut down.

I also create an image periodically of my primary Windows disk. I had a hard disk go on me once and being able to restore a backup image once the disk was replaced,  saved me untold hours of grief.

Now that everyone is going paperless, what will they do if they lose the data? That makes having some sort of backup essential.  I'm a nutcase on this issue because I've had problems in the past and when I didn't have a recovery option, I paid dearly.

I'd suggest that you discuss this with the person who deals with your computer hardaware and network issues.

I don't know anything about any of these backup services, Mel.  I am trying to figure out if this is something that I should do, or backing up to an external device will be sufficient.  People have offered some interesting opinons....I just don't know which is the best one.

Thank you to all who have responded to this question.

Does Carbonite have a mehtod whereby you encrypt the data you save on their servers or do you first encrypt it and then in a separate step save it?
